What was intended to be a general conversation about metamodernist sense-making, turned into discussion of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, and how it has unfolded across our media in recent days. Rather than taking a position or a stance, Ryan and I considered the challenge of finding sure ground when faced with the exercise of power by a despot. As John Vervake points out, our wisdom institutions are less central to our Western experiences, and so when faced with existential challenges, and the brute reality of tanks pushing through the streets, and people sheltering in subways, then we have to find ways to deal with this decentereing of our experience, without seeking refuge in mass identity. Of course, this discussion is from the safety of a coffee shop in Leicester.
